About the Item

Charles Catteau (1880-1966) is a Franco-Belgian ceramist whose work marked the history of 20th century ceramics. From 1906, he joined the Keramis factory, owned by the Boch Frères, located in La Louvière in Belgium. His production, varied and unclassifiable, is a great success with both amateurs and professionals. This stylistic diversity testifies to his double creative approach: on the one hand, he creates colorful, richly enameled earthenware, which evokes a retro style full of charm; on the other hand, he designs elegant stoneware, with abstract and sober motifs, imbued with a modern delicacy. One of the most remarkable pieces he has produced is a vase 34.5 cm high, displaying a large diameter. This vase, not only by its imposing size but also by its neat design, is signed "Charles Catteau". This signature is a considerable asset, because it guarantees the authenticity of the piece. Indeed, ceramics not signed by Catteau only carry a stamp from the Keramis Boch Frères manufacture, which reduces their market value and artistic scope. The vase, thanks to its generous proportions and fineness of work, is a true testimony to Catteau's expertise. The bright colors of its enameling and the precision of the patterns evoke the unique know-how of the artisans of the time, and perfectly illustrate Catteau's aesthetic vision.
