Exceptional hand-built Mata Ortiz pottery vessel signed by noted ceramic artist Lucy Mora. This finely burnished red clay vase features an elegant repeating lizard motif rendered in black slip with delicate white dot detailing, showcasing the highly refined craftsmanship associated with the Mata Ortiz pottery tradition of Chihuahua, Mexico. #5370 The vessel’s classic bulbous form with gently flared rim is beautifully balanced and meticulously polished, displaying the smooth satin surface and precision linework prized by collectors of contemporary Native and Mexican studio pottery. The rhythmic reptile decoration wraps continuously around the form, creating movement and strong visual impact while maintaining the minimalist sophistication characteristic of high-quality Mata Ortiz ceramics. Executed entirely by hand using traditional coil-building and open-fire techniques, this example reflects the influence of the legendary Juan Quezada pottery movement while maintaining Lucy Mora’s own distinctive decorative vocabulary. About Lucy Mora / Mata Ortiz Pottery Lucy Mora is associated with the celebrated Mata Ortiz pottery community of Chihuahua, Mexico, a movement internationally recognized for reviving the ancient ceramic traditions of the Casas Grandes culture. Mata Ortiz artists produce each vessel entirely by hand without a wheel, often using hand-ground pigments, natural clay bodies, and traditional firing methods. Collectors value Mata Ortiz pottery for its combination of technical precision, sculptural forms, and highly individualized surface decoration. Pieces by accomplished artists such as Lucy Mora have become increasingly sought after in the American Southwest, contemporary craft markets, and international design collections for their blend of indigenous tradition and modern artistic refinement. Mata Ortiz or Casas Grandes pottery comes from the small village of Mata Ortiz located near Nuevos Casas Grandes in northern Chihuahua, Mexico. The artists of Mata Ortiz are identified by their neighborhood or barrio in the village and the style of their work is often influenced by the designs of their family or friends who live there. Family ties and traditions are considered to be important. There are now several hundred potter artists working in the Mata Ortiz tradition.
