About the Item

A superb Cristallerie de Clichy vase dating from the turn of the 19th century, in a particularly rich and luxurious combination of color. The substantial rounded form is made from very thick, heavy cased glass, with a white inner layer and an opalescent ground in shades of golden yellow, orange, salmon, soft mauve, and white. The color is worked through the body of the glass, producing a complex, marble-like effect. Fine branching and feathery inclusions run through the glass, giving each side of the vase a different appearance. The vase has considerable physical presence. It is exceptionally solid and heavy, with a beautifully finished rounded foot and a restrained, architectural neck. The quality of the glass is particularly evident in the hand, where the depth of the casing and the variations in color become much more apparent. Cristallerie de Clichy, established at Clichy-la-Garenne near Paris in the mid-19th century, became one of France's important producers of colored glass. The manufactory was particularly known for its mastery of intense and translucent colors and for technically accomplished decorative glass. Clichy is perhaps best known today for its celebrated 19th-century paperweights and millefiori work, but the factory also produced vases and other decorative glass in small series. Examples of its vases are held in major museum collections, including the Musée d'Orsay and the Corning Museum of Glass. This particular vase has a more restrained decorative language than the elaborate millefiori pieces for which Clichy is famous. Its interest lies in the quality, weight, and depth of the glass, as well as the sophisticated combination of warm color and opalescence. For an interior, it would work particularly well in French Belle Époque or Art Nouveau interiors, Parisian apartments, contemporary classic interiors, 1970s Italian-inspired rooms, or sophisticated Mediterranean interiors or against dark wood, travertine, or natural stone. It would also make a strong standalone object on a console, mantelpiece, or low table. A rare and highly decorative piece for collectors of French glass and for decorators looking for an object with genuine material presence.
