About the Item

Here is a monumental hand-painted Italian majolica floor vase or umbrella stand by Elso Sora for A.M.A. Pesaro, dating to the 1950s. Beautifully executed in the celebrated Pesaro ceramic tradition, the vase features a sculptural four-lobed rim and an expressive hand-painted procession of theatrical figures inspired by the Commedia dell'Arte. Costumed musicians and dancers encircle the vessel, rendered in earthy browns with vibrant turquoise and olive green accents against a richly textured ivory ground. The interior is finished in a glossy chartreuse glaze, while the undulating rim is accented with a whimsical turquoise drip motif that echoes the colors of the painted decoration. The combination of the sculptural form, painterly execution and lively figural imagery exemplifies the artistic ceramics produced by A.M.A. Pesaro during the postwar period. Signed to the underside "A.M.A. Pesaro" and "Elso Sora," identifying the piece as one personally decorated by the artist. An impressive decorative statement, equally well suited as a floor vase, umbrella stand or sculptural object in both modern and traditional interiors. Condition: Very good vintage condition overall. There is one small chip to the inside edge of the rim that has been professionally reattached and is difficult to notice in normal display, as it is confined to the interior of the rim. Otherwise, the vase presents beautifully, with no apparent cracks or additional repairs. Minor wear consistent with age and use. Dimensions: Height: 18 in. (45.7 cm) Width: 11.5 in. (29.2 cm) Depth: 11.5 in. (29.2 cm)
