About the Item

A beautiful, stoneware art deco globe vase, with amazing green hares fur glaze. Designed by Nils Emil Lundström for Rörstrand, Sweden, 1920s. Great original condition. Some slight scuffs and scratches in the glaze. Nils Emil Lundström (1865–1960) was one of the most versatile figures in Swedish decorative arts during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. A painter, ceramic artist, porcelain decorator, and designer, he played a significant role in the artistic development of Rörstrand during a transformative period in the history of Swedish ceramics. Through his imaginative designs, painterly decorations, and technical experimentation, Lundström helped bridge the traditions of nineteenth-century craftsmanship and the emerging modern aesthetics of the new century. Born in Åbyn, Västerbotten, in 1865, Lundström initially pursued a conventional academic artistic education. After studies at Uppsala University, he continued his training in Düsseldorf, one of the leading centres of artistic education in Europe at the time, before enrolling at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm. Further studies in Berlin exposed him to contemporary artistic movements and broadened his understanding of design, painting, and applied art. These experiences provided the foundation for a career that would encompass multiple artistic disciplines. In 1896 Lundström joined Rörstrand, Sweden’s oldest porcelain manufacturer, as a pattern designer. It marked the beginning of an association that would last almost forty years. During this period he became one of the factory’s most important artistic contributors, creating a wide range of decorative schemes, exhibition pieces, vases, and ceramic artworks. His work reflected a rare combination of technical skill and painterly sensitivity, qualities that distinguished him within Swedish ceramics of the era. Lundström is particularly remembered for his richly decorated vases and art ceramics, many of which feature underglaze-painted landscapes, trees, floral motifs, and atmospheric natural scenes. Drawing inspiration from both Japanese ceramic traditions and contemporary Danish decorative arts, he developed a distinctive visual language characterised by subtle colour harmonies and finely observed natural motifs. Unlike many of his contemporaries, whose work tended toward stylisation, Lundström often retained a lyrical and naturalistic approach, giving his ceramics an almost painterly character. The Art Nouveau movement left a lasting mark on his work. Many of his finest objects display the flowing lines, organic ornamentation, and close relationship to nature associated with the Jugend style. Yet his artistic development did not stand still. During the 1910s and 1920s he became increasingly interested in stoneware and high-fired ceramics, participating in Rörstrand’s efforts to explore new materials and techniques. His experimental stoneware pieces, produced in relatively small numbers, are today regarded as some of the most intriguing examples of early Swedish artistic stoneware. Beyond ceramics, Lundström was active as a painter, textile designer, and furniture designer. This breadth of experience enriched his ceramic work, allowing him to approach decoration and form from multiple artistic perspectives. Whether designing a porcelain vase, a textile pattern, or an exhibition piece, he maintained a consistent interest in harmony, craftsmanship, and the expressive possibilities of ornament. Throughout his career, Lundström participated in major exhibitions in Sweden and abroad, including exhibitions in Stockholm, Paris, Liège, and Malmö. His work received numerous awards and contributed to the growing international reputation of Swedish decorative arts during the early twentieth century. As one of Rörstrand’s leading artistic figures, he helped guide the factory through a period of changing tastes and evolving artistic ideals. After Rörstrand relocated its production from Stockholm to Gothenburg in 1926, Lundström continued with the company and later worked at its Lidköping factory. He remained active until his retirement in 1935, leaving behind a remarkable body of work that reflected nearly four decades of artistic development within Swedish ceramics. When Nils Emil Lundström died in 1960, he left a legacy that extended far beyond the objects he designed. His ceramics embody a period when art, craft, and industry were closely intertwined, and when the decorative arts occupied a central place in cultural life. Today his vases, stoneware pieces, and underglaze-painted ceramics are highly valued by collectors and museums alike, admired for their technical excellence, artistic sensitivity, and enduring beauty. Through his work, Lundström helped establish a distinctly Swedish approach to ceramic art—one rooted in craftsmanship, inspired by nature, and enriched by a painter’s eye for colour and atmosphere.
