Kylix Greek, Attic 470–450 BC Pottery 22 cm long between handles; 4.8 cm high and 16 cm diameter. Condition: Good state of preservation. A break line has been professionally restored. Provenance: Private collection, France. Documentation: Accompanied by a thermoluminescence test report. Description: Attic pottery kylix, representing one of the most characteristic vessel forms associated with the ancient Greek symposium. Its low profile, broad circular bowl and horizontal handles correspond to a type specifically designed for drinking wine at banquets, where functionality was combined with refinement of form and iconographic interest. The interior is decorated with a central scene executed in the red-figure technique, depicting a nude male figure standing and holding a long staff or rod. The figure is enclosed within a circular medallion or tondo, a characteristic feature of Attic drinking cups. Concealed by wine when the vessel was full, the image would have been gradually revealed as the contents were consumed, establishing a direct visual relationship between the decoration and the act of drinking. The contrast between the lustrous black glaze and the figure reserved in the reddish colour of the clay exemplifies the visual elegance characteristic of Athenian pottery during the Early Classical period. The red-figure technique, developed in Athens towards the end of the 6th century BC, allowed painters considerably greater freedom in rendering the human body than the earlier black-figure method. Anatomical details, movement and individual features could be articulated with fine painted lines rather than incision, contributing to the increasingly naturalistic treatment of the human figure characteristic of the early 5th century BC. Beyond its practical function, the kylix was intimately connected with Greek social and cultural life. It circulated during the symposium, the aristocratic drinking gathering in which wine accompanied conversation, music, poetry, intellectual discussion and games. The imagery decorating these vessels frequently reflected this predominantly male environment, drawing upon mythology, athletics, warfare, ritual and scenes of everyday life. The present kylix, with its restrained composition centred upon a single nude male figure, illustrates the close relationship between form, image and function that distinguishes Classical Attic pottery. It was not simply a drinking vessel, but an object designed to be handled, observed and experienced progressively within the ritualised setting of the Greek symposium.
