Tsuiki is a metalworking technique derived from the words meaning “hammer” and “to raise.” Using a wide range of specialized tools—including dozens of varieties of toriguchi (iron rods)—the artisan gradually forms the vessel by hammering. Unlike techniques that stretch the metal, Tsuiki causes the copper to contract and densify as it is worked. During the process, the copper is repeatedly heated in a furnace to soften it, allowing the craftsman to continue shaping it with precision. The final stage involves surface coloring, bringing together technical expertise and refined aesthetic sensibility.
