About the Item

A striking large-scale Mid-Century Modern West German ceramic floor vase featuring an architectural sculptural silhouette with a distinctive loop handle and richly textured volcanic lava glaze. Executed in the 1960s-1970s, the vessel is finished in a soft stone-gray matte glaze with a finely pitted surface that beautifully contrasts with bold hand-applied abstract enamel decoration in black, turquoise blue, chartreuse green, charcoal, and burnt orange. The asymmetrical body, elongated neck, and integrated circular handle exemplify the expressive design language of postwar West German ceramics, while the abstract composition reflects the influence of Modernist and Brutalist aesthetics. Equally compelling as a standalone sculptural object or displayed with dried botanicals, the vase offers exceptional presence in contemporary, minimalist, or Mid-Century interiors. Marked on the underside "West Germany" and impressed with model number 279-38. A superb example of collectible West German art pottery that combines sculptural form, tactile surface, and vibrant abstract decoration. Dimensions Height: 15 in. (38.1 cm) Diameter: 8 in.
