About the Item

Modernist ceramic vase with handle was designed by Mari Simmulson for Upsale-Ekeby as a part of Sagina series in 1959. It has minimal, gently swelling form that is emphasized by abstract decor in sgraffito technique with linear textures and pastel color-block accents that follow the shape of the piece. Semi-glossy white glaze is used to accent the rim and the handle, as well as a base under the pastel glazes, guiding the eye along the lines of the vase and unifying various decor elements. The vase is marked on the bottom with stamped UE logo, model number, and Mari’s mark (MS or Maris). It is the taller one of two vases with handle and the second tallest vase in the Sagina series, standing xx" high. Mari Simmulson (1911-2000) is one of renowned representatives of the Swedish ceramic design of the 20th century. She was one of the leading designers for Gustavsberg and Upsala-Ekeby in the 1940s-1970s. Sagina is one of her most well-known series for Upsala-Ekeby; it consists of seven earthenware bowls and vases. The series was designed in 1959 and manufactured until 1964.
