About the Item

An impressive pair of Louis XVI-style porcelain covered urns, combining deep black glazed porcelain with richly contrasting gilt-bronze or ormolu-style mounts. Each vase has a classical baluster-form body surmounted by a removable domed cover and elaborate gilt-metal finial. Sculptural twin handles extend from the shoulders, incorporating scrolling forms and floral detailing reminiscent of French 18th-century decorative arts. Further gilt-metal mounts embellish the neck and base. The combination of black porcelain and gold-toned mounts gives the pair a particularly dramatic appearance, making them well suited to symmetrical placement on a mantelpiece, console table, sideboard or within a classical interior. While executed in the manner of Sèvres and Louis XVI decorative porcelain, without identifiable factory marks these are best catalogued as Sèvres-style rather than attributed directly to the Sèvres manufactory.
