About the Item

A pair of matching Japanese bronze vases from the 20th century finely cast with dragon figures. A high relief cast decoration of a three-clawed dragon is wrapped around the body of each vase, swimming in an aquatic environment symbolized by curved and spiraling etchings and a swimming turtle. The numerous etched anatomical details such as the mane and scales of the mythical beasts only add to the striking effect of these extraordinary pieces. Considered as an auspicious water deity in Japan embodying wisdom and strength, the dragons face each other when both vases are paired. The high and large neck with a slightly flared rim is adorned with a frieze of Chinese knots while the bottom of each vase is stamped with the place of production, Kyoto, Japan. This pair of Japanese bronze vases from the 20th century, with their finely cast and impressively protruding dragon figures, would bring an exquisite oriental accent to any home.

Pair of Japanese Blue and White Baluster Vases with Shaped Panels of Animals

Located in Palm Desert, CA

A pair of Japanese underglaze blue and white porcelain baluster vases from the late 19th century painted with shaped panels of flowers, insects and birds. Formerly in the Kentshire collection, each piece features a round panel with a fly on a prunus branch, naturalistically painted in cobalt blue on a white ground. Another shaped panel presents two charming birds on a branch painted by a free, fluid hand with shading and brushstrokes. Watery blue peonies, auspicious symbols of springtime and prosperity, emerge from a dense cobalt blue background of tight arabesques motifs arranged in a most delicate composition. The lip of the vase presents a thunder pattern frieze, symbol of life, and a mark on the bottom. This pair of Japanese blue and white porcelain vases...
