About the Item

A striking pair of vintage West German art pottery vessels attributed to Marei Keramik, executed during the height of the celebrated Fat Lava movement of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Featuring richly textured volcanic matte black glaze cascading over vivid oxblood red ceramic bodies, these sculptural forms embody the bold experimental aesthetic that defined German studio ceramics of the era. #5362 The taller vessel presents an elongated organic silhouette with sculptural protruding side elements, while the companion vase features a compressed rounded body with pierced lug handles and a narrow flared neck. Both pieces display dramatic lava-textured surfaces with expressive glaze pooling and crater-like volcanic effects characteristic of premium West German pottery production. Impressed model numbers to underside appear to read “4101” and “4306,” consistent with period West German factory numbering conventions. The vivid contrast between the saturated red glaze and heavily textured charcoal-black surface creates exceptional visual impact from every angle. An outstanding decorative pairing for Mid-Century Modern, Brutalist, Postmodern, or eclectic interiors. Attributed to: Marei Keramik Origin: West Germany Circa: 1970s Style: Fat Lava / Brutalist Modern Materials: Glazed ceramic pottery Dimensions: #4101 - 6"W x 5.25"D x 7.5"H, #4306 - 6.5z'd x 6.5"H Condition: Very good vintage condition with minor age-appropriate wear. No major chips or cracks observed. About Marei Keramik Marei Keramik was one of the notable West German ceramic producers associated with the postwar art pottery movement that flourished between the 1950s and 1970s. The company became known for sculptural forms and highly experimental glazes, including the volcanic “Fat Lava” textures now highly sought after by collectors of Mid-Century Modern design. Their ceramics remain prized for their bold coloration, architectural forms, and expressive handcrafted character.
