About the Item

A hand-blown cobalt blue glass vase produced by Pauly & C. - Compagnia Venezia Murano (C.V.M.), Venice, circa 1935. The amphora form sits on a disc foot, with a flared rim and two applied cobalt loop handles at the shoulder. It has a silhouette drawn directly from classical antiquity, and reinterpreted in the Art Deco vocabulary that defined Venetian glass production of the 1930s. Pauly & C. is one of the oldest continuously operating Murano houses, founded in 1866 by Venetian entrepreneur Antonio Salviati's circle and later consolidated under the Compagnia Venezia Murano mark. Throughout the early twentieth century, Pauly & C. commissioned and distributed work by a generation of designers and master glassblowers who went on to shape modern Italian glass, including Vittorio Zecchin, Umberto Bellotto, and the founding figures of Barovier, Seguso, and Toso. Pieces bearing the C.V.M. edition mark represent the house's in-house production during this period. The vase is hand-blown in a single gather of deep cobalt glass (vetro blu) with characteristic small seed bubbles visible throughout the body: a hallmark of period Murano production rather than a flaw. The applied handles are pulled and attached by hand, showing the subtle asymmetry of the soffiato technique. Measurements: 23.2 cm high × 15 cm wide × 12 cm deep (9.1 × 5.9 × 4.7 inches). Provenance: Private Italian collection, Venice. Acquired at auction. Condition: Very good vintage condition consistent with age. No chips, cracks, or restorations. Minor surface wear. The cobalt retains its full saturation when held to light.
