About the Item

A rare and visually compelling Tall Pinched Bosigo Studio Art Pottery Vase, created circa 1970s during the period of Peter Hayes’ involvement in ceramic development projects in the Kingdom of Lesotho, Southern Africa. This handmade studio piece reflects a powerful dialogue between traditional African pottery techniques and modernist sculptural abstraction, resulting in a form that feels both ancient and distinctly contemporary. The vase presents a tall, cylindrical silhouette that rises with quiet monumentality before terminating in an organically pinched, asymmetrical rim. This subtle distortion introduces movement and individuality, reinforcing its hand-built origins. A vertical ridge with rhythmic indentations runs down one side, creating shadow play and adding architectural structure to the composition. The surface treatment is particularly striking. The upper section features a smooth, matte, unglazed stoneware finish in a muted gray tone, lending the piece a refined restraint. In contrast, the lower half is richly textured with a deep brown patterned surface reminiscent of reptilian scales or woven textile motifs. This contrast between smooth and tactile surfaces, light and dark tones, and refined and primitive qualities exemplifies the era’s embrace of material honesty and sculptural form.
