A superb antique Loetz iridescent art glass vase, dating to approximately 1900, in a striking cobalt-blue ground with richly coloured iridescent surface decoration. This elegant Art Nouveau vessel is characterised by its graceful bottle-shaped form, softly dimpled body and distinctive quatrefoil-shaped rim. The combination of deep cobalt blue and shimmering iridescence gives the glass remarkable depth, with the surface changing subtly according to the direction and intensity of the light. The vase is a particularly attractive example of the experimental approach to iridescent glass that made Loetz Witwe one of the most celebrated Bohemian glass manufacturers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The softly textured and dimpled body catches the light beautifully, while the polished pontil mark to the underside retains an important characteristic of its hand-finished manufacture. The iridescent coating creates an extraordinary range of reflected colour across the cobalt-blue glass, transforming the vase from a deep blue object under subdued lighting into a much more luminous and colourful piece when exposed to strong natural light. At approximately 20.3 cm (8 inches) high, it has an elegant yet substantial presence and works beautifully as a standalone decorative object, specimen-flower vase or as part of a collection of European Art Nouveau glass. The glass retains its beautiful original surface and iridescence, with the polished pontil visible to the base. Loetz & Iridescent Art Glass Loetz Witwe, based in Bohemia, became internationally renowned for its innovative iridescent glass during the Art Nouveau period. The development of iridescent glass in the late 19th century was driven by a desire to recreate the naturally occurring, rainbow-like surface effects found on ancient glass recovered from archaeological sites. Special chemical treatments were developed in which glass vessels were exposed to metallic compounds and vapours during manufacture, producing a thin iridescent surface layer. The resulting colours could range from blue, gold and green to violet, pink and copper, often changing dramatically according to the light. Loetz became particularly celebrated for developing its own sophisticated interpretation of this technique, producing highly experimental surfaces and forms that became among the most recognisable examples of European Art Nouveau glass. A Striking Art Nouveau Vase The combination of deep cobalt-blue glass, iridescent surface, organic dimpled texture, quatrefoil rim and hand-finished pontil makes this a particularly appealing example for collectors. It is an especially effective decorative object when displayed near a window or beneath carefully positioned lighting, allowing the iridescence to reveal its full range of colours.
