About the Item

Royal Vienna Cabinet Vase, Allegory of Painting & Architecture, Signed Herner A finely painted Royal Vienna–style cabinet vase featuring richly gilded decoration, jewel-tone emerald grounds, and miniature allegorical scenes celebrating the fine arts. The piece is executed in the late 19th-century Viennese decorative tradition and measures a refined cabinet scale of 5 inches high. The elegant urn form rises from a deep emerald green pedestal base richly embellished with raised gilt scrollwork, supporting a softly tapering ivory porcelain body. The neck is pierced with elongated oval openings beneath a thickly gilded rim, a decorative device often used on Viennese cabinet vases to create lightness and architectural refinement. Two sculptural scroll handles entirely finished in burnished gold flank the form. The principal painted scene depicts a young female artist seated before an easel, holding a palette and brushes while studying her work. The composition represents the allegory of Malerei (Painting), a classical theme frequently depicted on Viennese porcelain and inspired by academic painting traditions of the 19th century. On the reverse appears a second allegorical scene with putti and a youthful figure associated with drawing and design, likely referencing Baukunst (Architecture)—a symbolic representation of the architectural arts. Such allegorical themes celebrating the liberal arts were extremely popular subjects on Vienna-style porcelain. The painting is finely executed in soft tonal shading with delicate flesh tones and atmospheric backgrounds, characteristic of highly skilled porcelain decorators working in the Vienna tradition. The miniature is artist-signed "Herner," indicating the individual decorator responsible for the painting. The underside bears handwritten inscriptions “Malerei” and “Baukunst,” translating from German as “Painting” and “Architecture,” identifying the allegorical subjects depicted. Vienna porcelain and the later “Royal Vienna style” pieces were celebrated for their romantic miniature painting, lavish gilding, and classical themes drawn from Renaissance and Greek ideals, often intended primarily as decorative display pieces rather than utilitarian objects.
