About the Item

A refined and atmospheric set of ten studio ceramic cylinder vases by Pieter Groeneveldt (1889–1982), created in the 1960s. Varying in height and glazes, the group presents a harmonious composition in layered turquoise tones, each vessel finished in one of three subtly differing glazes that highlight Groeneveldt’s mastery of surface and color. Born in Batavia in the former Dutch East Indies, Groeneveldt was a Dutch artist and ceramist whose career spanned much of the twentieth century. He studied at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam around 1914, where he developed a foundation in painting and sculpture before turning increasingly toward ceramics. His work reflects the influence of Far Eastern aesthetics and popularity of Ikebana flower arangements of the Mid 20th Century, particularly in its simplicity of form and emphasis on surface harmony. Groeneveldt became especially renowned for his experimental glazing techniques, often layering multiple glazes to achieve depth and variation. His signature palette includes luminous turquoise blues demonstrate his sensitivity to tonal nuance and material interaction. This set exemplifies his refined modernist approach, combining restrained cylindrical forms with richly atmospheric glaze effects, making them ideal as a sculptural group or individually displayed across contemporary and period interiors.
