About the Item

Silver plated Mid-Century 'Giselle' soliflor vase or candlestick. Designed by Lino Sabattini and produced by Sabattini in Italy, 1970s. Good original condition, but with some scratches and scuffs. Stamped with makers mark. Lino Sabattini (1925–2016) was one of Italy’s most celebrated metal designers and silversmiths, renowned for bringing a distinctly sculptural, modernist approach to silver and stainless steel tableware and decorative objects. Born in Correggio, Emilia-Romagna, he trained as a young metalworker before moving to Milan, where he came into contact with some of the leading figures in post-war Italian design. An early collaboration with the influential architect and designer Gio Ponti proved particularly formative, encouraging Sabattini to pursue a style that balanced technical precision with artistic expression. In 1956, Sabattini founded his own company in Bregnano, near Como, where he was able to fully develop his vision of metal as a medium for sculpture as well as functional design. Rather than relying on traditional ornamentation, he emphasized pure forms, flowing curves, and highly polished surfaces that reflected light in dynamic ways. His work often blurred the line between utilitarian objects and abstract sculpture, with candlesticks, bowls, trays, coffee sets, and vases appearing almost weightless despite being crafted from solid metal. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Sabattini became one of the leading representatives of Italian modernism. His designs drew inspiration from organic forms, contemporary architecture, and the minimalist movement, while remaining unmistakably elegant and practical. Working primarily in sterling silver, silver plate, brass, and stainless steel, he combined traditional handcraftsmanship with modern production techniques to achieve exceptional quality and refined proportions. Sabattini’s work was exhibited internationally and received numerous design awards, earning him recognition far beyond Italy. His pieces entered the collections of major museums, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and today they are highly sought after by collectors of twentieth-century design. Many of his creations remain in production or have been reissued, reflecting their enduring appeal and timeless aesthetic. Today, Lino Sabattini is regarded as one of the defining figures of post-war Italian metal design. His work embodies the ideals of Italian modernism: elegant simplicity, technical excellence, and a seamless fusion of art and function. Whether creating an understated serving tray or a dramatic sculptural candelabrum, Sabattini transformed everyday objects into enduring works of design that continue to influence designers and captivate collectors around the world.
