About the Item

A single-flower vase made of gilded Murano glass, featuring filigree work, crafted in the 1960s Ø 16 cm, h 11.5 cm Filigree work is one of the most fascinating, complex, and historic techniques in the entire Murano glassmaking tradition; it was invented on the island around the first half of the 16th century by the masters Filippo and Bernardo Catani. This technique transforms glass into an ethereal fabric, creating patterns reminiscent of Burano lace or exquisite embroidery—yet made entirely of molten silicon. The foundation of all filigree lies in the preparation of the glass rods. These are cylindrical rods consisting of a core of colored or opaque glass (historically, “lattimo,” a milky white) covered by an outer layer of transparent crystal. The process involves critical steps with a very high risk of breakage: the master craftsman arranges a series of these canes side by side on a metal plate (the marver). Heat the tubes until they stick together, then "join" them by rolling a hot, transparent glass cylinder (the bolo) over them and attaching it to the blowpipe. Once the rods have been incorporated into the molten glass, the master glassblower blows and shapes the object, stretching and twisting the internal strands. The ribs run parallel along the body of the object. If the mass is rotated slightly during the blowing process, the strands take on an elegant spiral pattern (visible at the top of the vase on the left in the carousel).
