About the Item

A beautifully hued flower form vase by Tiffany Studios, this delicate piece is so brilliantly colored and dynamically formed as to provide a strength of design that is at ravishing odds with the daintiness of the work's composition. A rippling upper edge in whiteish shades allows for peeks of the golden hues within the vase, a golden coloration also present in the body of the vase's bloom, and complemented by the Kelly green color of the piece's stalk. The subtly undulating base feature gossamer striations of green, gold and whiteish tones. Item #: T-21682 Artist: Tiffany Studios New York Country: United States Circa: 1900's Dimensions: 11" height, 4" diameter. Materials: Favrile Glass Signed: L.C.T. M8918 Literature: A similar vase is pictured in: Tiffany at Auction, by Alastair Duncan, New York: Rizzoli, 1981, p. 24, cat. no. 44; The Tiffany Collection of the Chrysler Museum at Norfolk, by Paul E. Doros, Richmond, VA: W. M. Doros, New York: The Vendome Press, 2013, p. 74, fig. 27. Macklowe Gallery Curator's Notes: Favrile glass vases in the shapes of stylized flowers were among the earliest creations of the Tiffany Glass and Decorating Company, forerunner of Tiffany Studios. Initial examples of this technique date from approximately 1894, although later pieces show greater refinement. Flower forms have great variety in stem length and rim shape.

Tiffany Studios New York "Pansy" Favrile Glass Vase

Tiffany Studios New York "Pansy" Favrile Glass Vase

By Tiffany Studios

Located in New York, NY

Known as a "Pansy" vase, this Favrile glass creation by Tiffany Studios New York begins with a bulbous base in deep hues of striated, swirling iridescent yellow and gold. Shooting upward from the base is an elongated, narrow neck of similar coloration, darkening in coloration as it ascends. From the narrow neck explodes an outward facing glass bloom in brilliant shades of ochre, umber and marigold, made to shimmer by the undulations in the bloom's outer edges, all tinged with iridescence. Item #: T-22418 Artist: Tiffany Studios New York Country: United States Circa: 1900 Dimensions: 17" height, 8.75" width, 4.5" depth. Materials: Favrile Glass Signed: L.C.T. Y1789 Literature: A similar vase is pictured in Timeless Beauty: The Art of Louis Comfort Tiffany, Atglen, PA: Schiffer Publishing, 2016, p. 179; and in: The Tiffany Collection of the Chrysler Museum at Norfolk, by Paul E. Doros, Richmond, VA: W. M. Brown & son, Inc., 1978, p. 40, cat. no. 47 Macklowe Gallery Curator's Notes: The term “Jack-in-the-Pulpit,” commonly used by collectors today, is in fact a misnomer; this model is more accurately identified as a “Pansy” vase. The form of this Favrile “Pansy” vase was first developed by gaffer John Hollingsworth (American, born England, 1851–1923) in 1906. Like all of Tiffany’s skilled glassmakers, Hollingsworth was encouraged to experiment at the furnace, fostering continual innovation in form and finish. Its gold Favrile surface begins as luminous yellow uranium glass, then achieves its signature iridescence through a delicate spray of silver nitrate. From the outset, these vases were highly prized by early collectors of Tiffany’s blown glass...
