About the Item

Vaso della serie Scavo in blown glass, design Alfredo BARBINI. Murano, 70s ORIGIN Murano PERIOD 1970s DESIGNER Alfredo BARBINI (Murano, January 13, 1912 – Murano, February 13, 2007) Master glassmaker and designer, a descendant of a family of Murano glassmakers that has been active since the 17th century. He learned the art of glassmaking at a very young age, first at Cristallerina Franchetti and S.A.I.A.R. Ferro Toso, and then at the Zecchin & Martinuzzi glassworks (1932–1936), where he trained under the guidance of sculptor Napoleone Martinuzzi in the crafting of solid glass. From 1936 to 1945, he was head master at VAMSA (Vetri Artistici Muranesi Società Anonima); from 1946, he served as artistic director of the Gino Cenedese glassworks, for which he created the famous “Acquari”—blocks of colorless glass encasing elements of marine flora and fauna—and participated in the 1948 Venice Biennale. In 1950, he founded Vetreria Alfredo Barbini, which he ran with his children, Oceania and Flavio, and which specialized in solid glass, submerged glass, thin blown glass, and murrina. He perfected the technique of carving, which became one of his most recognizable hallmarks. He participated in the Venice Biennales of 1950, 1954, 1960, 1962, and 1968. He is considered one of the greatest glass artists of the 20th century. MODEL Excavation MATERIALS Murano blown glass; metal oxides and powders on the surface TECHNIQUE Mouth-blowing; excavation technique: the still-hot blown glass is coated with metal oxides and mineral powders, which, as it cools, fuse with the surface to create a rough, corroded patina reminiscent of ancient glass found in archaeological excavations.
