About the Item

Exceptional set of three English Burmese art glass vases manufactured by Thomas Webb & Sons in England during the Victorian period, circa the late 19th century. The pieces display the characteristic color palette of Burmese glass: a gradual transition from creamy yellow at the base to delicate pink tones along the rims and upper sections. The set consists of three vases in different proportions, united by the same formal and chromatic identity. The tallest vase features a rounded body, a long and narrow neck, and a widely flared rim finished with a rippled and crimped edge. The two smaller pieces repeat the same relationship between a bulbous body, a slender neck, and an open rim, creating a coherent and balanced composition. The opaque, satin surface softens the intensity of the colors and gives the pieces a warm, velvety appearance. The gradient does not present an abrupt division, but rather a progressive transition between the light tones of the base and the pink hues of the rim. This characteristic is one of the most recognizable features of Burmese glass and is achieved through a heat-reactive formula that changes the coloration of the glass during the manufacturing and reheating processes. Burmese glass was originally developed in the United States during the 1880s. Shortly afterward, Thomas Webb & Sons obtained a license to produce it in England, where the company perfected its own version and marketed it as Queen’s Burmese Ware. The name reflects the popularity this type of glass achieved during the reign of Queen Victoria, rather than a geographical origin in Burma. Thomas Webb & Sons was one of England’s most important manufacturers of art and decorative glass, based in Stourbridge, a region renowned for its glassmaking tradition. The company produced blown, satin-finished, enameled, and decorated pieces, and became particularly recognized for its colored glass and for developing decorative techniques applied to luxury objects. The production of these pieces began with molten glass, which was blown and shaped to create the body, neck, and opening. The rippled rims were worked while hot through controlled tools and movements that opened and crimped the glass while preserving the symmetry of the form. The satin surface softens the reflections and enhances the characteristic color transition of Burmese glass. The set is especially appealing because it allows the same color formula and decorative language to be appreciated in three different scales. Together, the vases create a strong visual composition, although they may also be displayed individually in different areas of an interior. They can be used as independent decorative objects on a console, in a display cabinet, on a chest, or on a coffee table, or incorporated into a collection of Victorian English glass. Their combination of color, form, and technique represents one of the most recognizable examples of decorative glass produced by Thomas Webb & Sons during the Victorian period.
