About the Item

Sculptural Organic Modern vase was hand blown with thin layer of gold foil fused over cobalt blue glass. The abstract, graphic pattern is swirling around the curves of the vase; the whole structure is enclosed in thin layer of clear glass in sommerso technique, adding depth and definition to the piece. Minimal shape of the vase allows the bold flow of the pattern to take the center stage. The vase is signed and dated in etching on the bottom; rare, hard to find example of vintage Vitrix glasswork would make a great gift to any studio glass or art collector. Founded in 1979 by brothers Matthew and Thomas Buechner III in Corning's Market Street District, Vitrix Hot Glass Studio is regarded among America's prominent contemporary glass studios. Thomas Buechner (1926-2010) attended Princeton University, the Art Students League in New York and the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. Buechner was appointed Director of the Corning Museum of Glass in 1950 after his tenure as an exhibition designer at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Buechner established the Museum's academic journals and curated the groundbreaking exhibition, Glass 59, that was the first to explore international works in contemporary glass. The first Director of The Corning Museum of Glass (1950-1960) and then Director of the Brooklyn Museum (1960-1971), Buechner simultaneously worked as an illustrator for the Chicago Tribune’s and the Washington Post’s “Book World”. Since then, he has been an independent artist, and a mentor to many aspiring artists in the community. As author and lecturer, Buechner is known to glass scholars, artists and collectors. He wrote the glass section for the Encyclopedia Britannica and founded both the Journal of Glass Studies and the New Glass Review. His art has been acquired by museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American Art. He taught in Rome and Germany, Corning and Elmira.

Matthew Buechner for Thames Glass Bud Vase, American Studio Glass 1988

Matthew Buechner for Thames Glass Bud Vase, American Studio Glass 1988

Located in Clifton Springs, NY

Sculptural Organic Modern vase features rounded, elongated form, decorated with thin layer of gold foil fused over cobalt blue glass. The abstract, graphic pattern is swirling around the curves of the vase; the whole structure is enclosed in thin layer of clear glass in sommerso technique, adding depth and definition to the piece. Minimal shape of the vase is accented with pronounced, wide rim and considerable layer of clear glass on the bottom, functioning both as a structural foot of the vase and as a visual separator, elevating the vase from the surface it's displayed on . The streamlined form of the vase allows the bold flow of the pattern to take the center stage. The vase is signed and dated in etching on the side near the bottom; it comes with the original paper booklet. We are offering two cobalt and gold sommerso glass vases, created by Thomas Buechner III and Thomas Kelly for Vitrix Hot Glass Studio in 1990s; as Matthew has close ties to Vitrix studio, it is fascinating to see the reinterpretation of cobalt and gold theme by different artists with similar artistic background, and all three vases form a striking grouping when displayed together. Sculptural, highly decorative vase with graphic form, high quality craftsmanship, and statement piece presence will make a great gift to a collector or a design enthusiast and a perfect addition to a wide range of interiors, from Traditional to Post Modern, Art Deco, Mid Century Modern, Eclectic, Transitional, Scandinavian Modern, Minimalist, Japandi, Collected, or Contemporary. Matthew Buechner is an established American glass artist; he started his training in 1975 as an apprentice to glassblower Jon Meyer in Canton, New York, and continued it at Hartwick College in Oneonta, New York, where he studied glass blowing with Michael Pavlik. Matthew also served as an apprentice at the Glashutte Eisch in Germany, and attended workshops at Rhode Island School of Design, the Penland School of Design, and the Haystack Mountain School in Maine. In 1979, together with his brother Thomas Buechner III, Matthew founded Vitrix Hot Glass Studio in Corning's Market Street District, regarded among America's prominent contemporary glass studios. In 1981 Matthew founded his own studio, Thames Glass...

Crystalline Glaze Bud Vase Blue & Yellow, American Art Studio Pottery

Crystalline Glaze Bud Vase Blue & Yellow, American Art Studio Pottery

Located in Clifton Springs, NY

The striking vintage studio pottery ceramic vase is decorated with crystalline glaze in contrasting blue and mustard yellow colors. The vase was hand thrown on a wheel; blue color crystals on ombre colored base, shifting from ligher shade of yellow on top to deep mustard yellow on the bottom, were grown in a kiln during a very long, controlled firing. Each crystalline piece is unique due to the nature of the glaze. The vase was allowed to develop an abundance of distinct, graphic crystals, creating a free-flowing abstract pattern and adding rich texture to the minimally shaped piece. The vase was made by Wizards of Clay, studio pottery in Finger Lakes region of Upstate NY. Since 1962 the family-run studio creates traditional pottery in variety of glazes. The vase is clearly signed on the bottom. Sculptural Organic Modern bud vase...
