About the Item

Rare and unusual Murano art glass bowl or ashtray was made with a layer of burst silver foil on blue and clear cased glass and amber glass base. Proper attribution was made after studying multiple examples of Barbarico series by Ercole Barovier for Barovier & Toso in catalogues, auctions listings, and other publications; multiple pieces with creator's stickers had similar finish on outer surfaces and layering of encased blue glass on inner surfaces. While some similarities exist between this piece and Porpora series bowls, the colorway strongly suggests Barbarico attribution. The Barbarico series was created in 1951, and the shape of the bowl dates to early to mid-1950s. Multiple examples of bowls or ashtrays, created and signed by Barovier & Toso in this organic, freeform shape, can be found in both online and printed catalogues. The bowl is in good vintage condition with age-appropriate, slight signs of wear around the base; please refer to pictures. Literature: Italian Galss Murano Milan 1930-1970, p.250; 20th Century Factory Glass, p.27.
