About the Item

Highly decorative stoneware and ceramic ashtray by Marius Bessone, made in Vallauris, in the South of France, circa the 1950s. This strongly modeled piece is representative of the remarkable revival of artistic ceramics that made Vallauris internationally celebrated during the postwar period. The ashtray has a substantial circular form with a deep central bowl and a broad rim punctuated by several cigarette rests. Around the exterior runs a striking raised geometric decoration, composed of abstract, architectural motifs that give the piece an unusually sculptural and graphic presence. Its richly textured glaze combines warm shades of brown, ochre, beige, and cream. Subtle variations created during firing emphasize the relief decoration and contribute to the handcrafted character associated with French Vallauris pottery. A raised circular element in the center of the bowl completes the balanced composition. Marius Bessone belongs to the generation of ceramic artists associated with the extraordinary development of Vallauris ceramics in the mid-20th century. During the 1950s and 1960s, this town on the French Riviera became one of Europe’s most important centers for modern pottery, attracting artists, designers, and innovative ceramic workshops. Beyond its original function as an ashtray, the piece works beautifully today as a catchall, decorative bowl, desk accessory, or sculptural object. Its compact proportions and strong graphic design make it particularly suitable for a Mid-Century Modern, Brutalist, vintage, or eclectic interior. Dimensions: Diameter: 6.1 in.
