About the Item

René Lalique (1860–1945) Exceptional Suite of Five “Deux Zephirs” Ashtrays Designed in 1913 Molded-pressed glass, satin and polished finish. Colors: opalescent, yellow , electric blue, smoke grey and amber Molded “R. Lalique” signatures. Catalogue Essay Designed in 1913, “Deux Zephirs” belongs to Lalique’s most decisive and poetic creative phase, at the very threshold between mature Art Nouveau symbolism and the emerging geometry of Art Deco. The composition depicts two winged heads — personifications of the West Wind — whose flowing hair expands into an enveloping network of rhythmic curves. Lalique’s sculptural treatment demonstrates an extraordinary understanding of light interaction within molded glass. The gathering of five distinct colors offers an exceptional comparative view of Lalique’s chromatic research and elevates the ensemble beyond decorative functionality into the realm of curatorial relevance. The relief, of great subtlety, captures the light and reveals the depth of the hues according to the angle of illumination. The meeting of the five colors allows an exceptional comparative reading of Lalique’s chromatic work: Opalescent exalts the effects of translucence and modeling. Yellow introduces a warm and organic tone. Blue accentuates the graphic tension of the reliefs. The smoke plays on transparency and nuance. Amber affirms a denser sculptural presence. Complete suites of this model are rarely encountered at auction and are actively sought by advanced collectors and institutions.
