12 Indian Silvered & Gilt Anklets as Gilt-Brass Coasters/Ashtrays/Dishes A remarkable set of twelve antique Indian silver anklets dating to the late 19th century, subsequently repurposed during the mid-20th century, ideal for fine dining and entertaining, the twelve versatile dishes as distinctive drinks coasters, ashtrays, and vide-poche dishes. Originally fashioned as traditional tribal jewelry, each substantial circular form is worked with spiraling repoussé fluting, raised beaded borders, geometric bands, and stylized foliate ornament. The cool silver exteriors contrast with the warm gilt-brass interiors, producing a striking presentation when grouped together on a bar, dining table, or cocktail table. The visible opening seams and banded terminals remain from the anklets’ original construction. These details provide evidence of their former use while contributing to the sculptural character of the converted forms. Such substantial anklets traditionally served as personal adornment and as visible expressions of regional identity, status, and family wealth. As expected of individually handmade ethnographic objects, the twelve examples vary subtly in diameter, height, and decorative detail. These variations are inherent to their original manufacture and give the collection considerably more character than a conventional matched set. Their generous proportions accommodate drinking glasses particularly well, while the deep gilt-brass wells also make them useful as individual ashtrays, small serving dishes, or vide-poches for jewelry, coins, and other personal articles. When not in use, they may be stacked or arranged as decorative objects. Age-appropriate patina, oxidation, surface wear, and variations to the gilt interiors are present throughout. India, anklets circa 1880–1900; converted circa 1950–1970. Approximately 2 in. high × 5.5 in. diameter each.
