About the Item

Antique 19th Century Chinese Export solid silver wine ewer, impressive and exceptionally fine quality. Of baluster form, the body is richly worked with densely rendered village scenes, populated by numerous figures amid buildings and trees, and set to one side with a shield shaped cartouche. The neck is finely decorated with water buffalo among reeds, while the cover is surmounted with a warrior figure, presumably Guan Yu (关羽), shown in a martial setting. The handle is naturalistically modelled as a water dragon. Of particular note is the rare mechanical feature ingeniously incorporated into the handle: a concealed lever operating the hinged cover, enabling it to open and close smoothly. The decoration throughout is exceptionally crisp and intricate, incorporating many of the most admired motifs and techniques found in Chinese Export silver, including engraved stylised foliage, bamboo leaves, animal forms, an applied dragon handle, and the highly sought-after village scenes associated with noble life. The circular stepped foot is further embellished with carp and aquatic vegetation. The base is Hallmarked Chinese silver, Artisans mark 昌發 (Cheung Fat). Retailer's mark "HC" for Hung Chong & Co (11b Nanking Road, Shanghai). Hung Chong & Co was one of the leading Chinese silversmith workshops and retailers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, renowned for producing finely crafted Chinese export silver in Shanghai. The firm is generally dated to around 1830–1925, although its retail premises at 11B Nanking Road were established in 1892 by Fok Ying Chew, following an earlier manufacturing operation. In 1906, the business was sold to Sum Luen-sing, under whose ownership it continued to flourish, employing a substantial number of craftsmen and assistants. Hung Chong & Co became particularly noted for its elaborate repoussé silverware, incorporating traditional Chinese motifs such as dragons, chrysanthemums, birds and flowering plants, as well as finely decorated tea services, boxes, caskets and presentation pieces. The firm also traded in luxury goods including blackwood furniture, embroidery and silk, reflecting the cosmopolitan character of Shanghai during this period. Its silver was produced for both Chinese and Western customers and is now regarded as an important part of the history of Chinese export silver, with examples held in museums and private collections around the world.
