About the Item

A rare and highly attractive antique Georgian decanter, probably of Irish manufacture, dating to approximately 1820, with a beautifully engraved “PORT” inscription and distinctive target or bullseye stopper. This elegant Prussian-style taper decanter has a broad, substantial base and attractive mallet-shaped body, enhanced by finely executed facet cutting and a particularly appealing concave petal-facet cut around the lower body. The front is engraved “PORT” in large capital letters, embellished with elegant scrolling and curling decoration. The inscription makes the decanter particularly desirable as a dedicated vessel for port wine and gives the piece considerable character. The decanter has a beautifully proportioned Georgian form, with a substantial broad base providing excellent stability. The underside retains a concave polished pontil mark, consistent with hand-blown glass manufacture. The original target stopper is particularly attractive, featuring a pronounced central bullseye or “target” design. It appears to be cut and polished rather than moulded, with a wonderfully tactile optic effect at its centre. The stopper fits securely and correctly within the neck. The glass itself has an attractive slightly greyish or smoky tone, characteristic of much early 19th-century glass, adding considerably to its antique character. A wonderful example for a collection of Georgian glass, Irish glass, antique decanters or fine barware, and equally suitable for display or use. MEASUREMENTS Height: 10½” (26.7 cm) Base diameter: 4½” (11.4 cm) Capacity: approximately 1 litre Weight: approximately 914 g CONDITION Excellent antique condition. No chips, nibbles or significant scratches noted to the body or stopper. The original stopper is present and fits correctly. The glass retains an attractive period appearance with the natural greyish tone and minor characteristics associated with early hand-blown glass. Please examine all photographs carefully, which form part of the condition description. AN ATTRACTIVE GEORGIAN FORM The broad-based Prussian or taper decanter was a popular form during the Georgian period, particularly for the storage and serving of wines and spirits. The combination of the facet-cut body, engraved “PORT” inscription, broad base and unusual target stopper makes this a particularly appealing example. I have also listed a pair of larger, similar Georgian Magnum decanters separately, and have included photographs of another comparable Georgian decanter for reference. A beautiful and highly decorative survivor of the Georgian period—equally at home in a traditional dining room, drinks cabinet or serious collection of antique glass. We ship tracked, worldwide.
