About the Item

French Art Deco Silverplate & Crystal Cocktail “Cobbler” Shaker By Saglier Frères and Cristalleries de Baccarat, France, circa 1920. An elegant and rare French Art Deco cocktail “Cobbler” shaker created circa 1920 through the collaboration of Saglier Frères, Paris, and the prestigious Cristalleries de Baccarat. Crafted in silverplate with a finely cut crystal body, this refined bar accessory perfectly captures the sophistication and modern spirit of the early Jazz Age. The cylindrical crystal body is complemented by a sleek silverplated mount and integrated strainer top, demonstrating the geometric clarity and functional elegance characteristic of French Art Deco design. The balance between luminous Baccarat crystal and precise metalwork reflects the era’s fascination with luxury materials and streamlined form. Stamped **“S*F *” (see photo), corresponding to Saglier Frères, 12 rue d’Enghien, Paris. Measurements Height: 9.1 inches (23.2 cm) Width: 3.55 inches (9 cm) About Saglier Frères The firm originated with Victor Saglier (1809–1894), a distinguished French goldsmith celebrated for his refined metalwork during the Art Nouveau period. Saglier collaborated with major decorative arts figures including Louis Majorelle, Daum, and Émile Gallé. Deeply connected to the artistic movement of Nancy, Saglier’s work embodied the philosophy of the École de Nancy, drawing inspiration from nature to shape both structure and ornament. His production ranged from glass vases with metal mounts, bowls, pitchers, and planters to tea and coffee services and candlesticks in silver, gilt metal, bronze, and cast zinc. After Victor Saglier’s death, the firm at 12 rue d’Enghien became Saglier Frères, managed by his brothers Eugène and André. The company continued producing refined decorative and functional objects, transitioning stylistically from the organic curves of Art Nouveau to the cleaner lines and restrained geometry of the Art Deco period — as exemplified by this cocktail shaker. About Cristalleries de Baccarat Founded in 1764, Baccarat is internationally renowned for producing some of the finest crystal in Europe. By the early 20th century, Baccarat had become synonymous with technical excellence, brilliance of cut, and luxury craftsmanship. During the Art Deco era, Baccarat embraced modern design principles while maintaining its tradition of precision cutting and exceptional clarity. Collaborations with leading silversmiths and designers further elevated its reputation for sophisticated tableware and barware suited to the cosmopolitan lifestyle of the 1920s. A rare and highly collectible example of French Art Deco barware, this Saglier Frères and Baccarat cocktail shaker embodies the glamour, craftsmanship, and innovation of 1920s Paris.
