About the Item

This set of twelve tall Collins or highball glasses is decorated in the pattern known in the trade as ‘Cavalcade,’ produced by the Libbey Glass Company of Toledo in the 1950s. Each plain cylindrical glass is given an overall satin-frosted ground, against which the decoration is applied in opaque white and gold, so that the figures read clearly whichever way the glass is turned. The design is arranged as a continuous frieze in three registers. A band of galloping horses in gold runs around the middle of the glass, with further ranks of horses in white above and below, all in the same long, extended stride, the manes and tails drawn out in loose curling lines. Around the rim runs a border of slender leafy sprigs, alternately white and gold. The bases are plain and unmarked. The Libbey Glass Company of Toledo, Ohio, founded in 1888 and among the largest American glassmakers of the twentieth century, produced a long series of decorated tumbler patterns for the domestic market through the 1950s and 1960s, of which Golden Foliage is the best known. These were sold as coordinated sets for informal entertaining, and the combination of a frosted ground with fired-on white and gold decoration is characteristic of the group. The equestrian subject was among the more successful of the patterns, and sets survive in reasonable numbers but seldom in this quantity. Twelve matching glasses will seat a full table, which is the difficulty with almost all mid-century barware of this kind, and the run of gold around the twelve is even and unrubbed. They are as usable as they are decorative, equally at home with a Tom Collins, a gin fizz, or iced tea on a summer afternoon. Dimensions Height: 7 inches (17.8 cm) Diameter: 2½ inches (6.4 cm)
