About the Item

Unusual, Victorian Period, Medieval-style, Continental Silver (.800) wager/marriage cup, which also functions as a working bell (it still has its working clapper), Germany, Ca. 1895. The wager/marriage cup measures 5 inches high x 1 1/2 inches diameter across bottom (the widest point of the wager/marriage cup being the bottom of the woman's skirt). The inside of the woman's skirt is gilded. The cup weighs 3.515 Troy ounces. The wager/marriage cup is in the form of the figure of a woman, her arms raised, holding up a cup on a swivel. When the figure is turned upside-down, her skirt becomes another cup. Since the top cup swivels, it is now possible for two people to drink from both ends of the cup at the same time (as it was also used in Medieval times when, at banquets, wagers were placed to see if two people could actually drink out of both ends of the cup at the same time without spilling the contents). If one chooses, this wager/marriage cup can also just be used as a bell. Dark areas on silver in photos are reflections. In very good antique condition.
