About the Item

An exceptional and highly ornate German solid silver sugar bowl (alternatively styled as a small table centerpiece or jardinière), masterfully executed in the opulent Neo-Rococo taste at the turn of the 20th century. The body features a magnificent display of silversmithing artistry, highlighted by two deeply embossed, high-relief playful putti/cherubs maneuvering a stylized shell boat over rolling waves. The surrounding surface is intricately detailed with a classical diaper lattice motif, asymmetric rocaille scrolls, volutes, and blooming floral swags. The bowl is flanked by two substantial, open-work cast scroll handles featuring fine acanthus leaf detailing, and it stands elegantly on four matching organic scroll feet. The interior retains its original, vibrant vermeil (gold wash) finish, originally applied by the silversmith to protect the sterling alloy from the acidity of its contents while offering an elegant dual-tone contrast. The base is fully hallmarked with the complete Imperial German unified national stamps, including the Halbmond (crescent moon), the Krone (crown), the ".800" purity mark, and a stylized maker's workshop stamp. A quintessential example of late-Victorian era Continental silver elegance. Dimensions W 15 cm / 5.9 in. x D 10 cm / 3.9 in. x H 7.5 cm / 3.0 in.
