About the Item

A brilliant display of iron red and gold covers this large Coalport porcelain centerpiece, hand painted in Shropshire, England, circa 1820. The elongated oval form is decorated inside and out with the celebrated Red Chrysanthemum pattern. Large iron-red blossoms emerge from a dense network of scrolling stems, delicate leaves, and smaller flowers, creating an exceptionally rich all-over design against the fresh white porcelain ground. Gold is fully integrated into the decoration, defining the branching stems, tracing the upper edges, and forming broad gilded bands around the body and spreading oval foot. The interplay of deep red, white porcelain, and extensive gilding gives the centerpiece warmth, brilliance, and a strong decorative presence. The boat-shaped form rises at either end and rests on a substantial oval foot. Its generous scale and beautifully coordinated decoration make it an impressive example of early 19th-century English porcelain and a splendid centerpiece for a dining table, sideboard, or large cabinet. Dimensions: 12.25 inches long x 8.25 inches wide x 4 inches tall Condition: Excellent Price: $780 Background of Early Coalport Porcelain John Rose established the Coalport porcelain factory in Shropshire at the end of the 18th century. During the early decades of the 19th century, Coalport became known for finely made porcelain, brilliant enamel colors, Japanese-inspired patterns, and extensive gilding. Many pieces from this period were unmarked and are identified through their shapes, decoration, porcelain body, and workmanship
