About the Item

Monumental in presence and minimal in gesture, this large marble centerpiece embodies the sculptural rigor and material sensitivity associated with Angelo Mangiarotti’s work. Attributed to Mangiarotti and produced by Up & Up in Italy during the 1970s, the piece is carved from a single block of black marble, defined by a bold circular form and a deeply recessed center. The thick, rounded edge creates a strong architectural profile, emphasizing both weight and balance. The marble features a striking network of natural white veining that runs dynamically across the surface, creating a dramatic contrast against the deep black ground. The interior basin reveals a more matte, subtly textured finish, bearing visible traces of use that enhance its authenticity and tactile quality. The underside shows a beautifully worked base with concentric tooling marks, highlighting the craftsmanship and the solid nature of the material. A partial original label remains visible, with traces of the “Up & Up” mark (see photo), supporting the attribution. At once functional and sculptural, the piece works equally well as a centerpiece, vide-poche, or standalone object. Condition Good vintage condition, with visible signs of age and use. Surface wear, scratches, and patina consistent with time, particularly within the central basin and underside, as shown in photos. No structural issues.
