About the Item

This early 20th century piece of Italian lustreware was made by the renowned Rubboli family pottery in the Umbrian town of Gualdo Tadino, Italy. Italian lustreware Majolica production traces its origins to the Renaissance. The art was revived in Gualdo Tadino during the last quarter of the 19th century, largely due to the efforts of ceramist Paolo Rubboli. Rubboli established his pottery in the region around 1870, and became known for the high quality of his distinctive cobalt, red and gold Neo-Renaissance lustreware. Rubboli's wife Daria and sons Lorenzo and Alberto continued Paolo's efforts after his death in 1890, and joined the newly formed consortium Societa Ceramica Umbria in 1920. Rubboli pieces dating to the period are marked with a blue underglaze "SCU" in a triangle mark along with a conjoined "PR" monogram in homage to Paolo's work. This large ceramic Neo-Renaissance Rubboli double handled compote is finished in cobalt, red and gold lustre. The piece consists of a round bowl at the top with elongated applied handles at either side, all of which rest upon a pedestal base. The bowl features two bas-relief winged mask heads on the exterior which have been depicted with open mouths sprouting handles in the form of serpent-like forked tongues. The exterior is also painted with pairs of imposing gryphons, each of which flank a large urn. The interior of the bowl is also heavily decorated and bears a fantastical winged lion set at the center of a series of scrolling acanthus leaves and urns, best seen in image 8. The remainder of the piece is finished with foliate and geometric motifs. It is of note that a similar piece was included in the traveling exhibit of important Majolica and lusterware entitled 'The Rubboli Collection - Italian lustre pottery in Gualdo Tadino' held in the Chiesa Monumentale di San Francesco between July 17 – October 3, 2010. The compote is in excellent original condition with no restorations or repairs. There are some glaze skips present on the piece as well as minor chips at the base of the pedestal foot which do not detract from the appearance of the compote and are mentioned for accuracy. The underside of the piece bears the blue underglaze Rubboli family Società Ceramica Umbra mark cited above consisting of the letters “SCU” within a triangle along with the entwined Paolo Rubboli 'PR' monogram, which was used from 1920 to 1931. The 3lb 5oz compote stands 11.5" tall as measured to the uppermost part of the handles while the rim of the bowl is 10 3/8" from the display surface. The mouth of the bowl is 7.5" in diameter while the bowl is 3.5" deep. The foot is 5" in diameter. This striking lustred Maiolica compote displays beautifully and would be a great addition to a collection of Fine Italian ceramics. A visually arresting museum quality piece.

By Reissner Stellmacher & Kessel

Located in Cincinnati, OH

This striking amphora Art Nouveau vase was made in the Turn-Teplitz region of Bohemia by Riessner, Stellmacher & Kessel, established in 1892. The vase has an ovoid form with a thick molded floral and foliate band located at the neck. The body of the vase rests upon a raised pedestal foot decorated with a series of intertwined stylized roots. The neck and foot have been glazed in a matte green color with burnished gold highlights. The body of the vase is flanked by a pair of arched gilded handles made in the form of naturalistic woody branches. The body of the vase has been finished in a mottled matte glaze executed in a dull gold color enabling the cream color beneath to show through. The center of the vase transitions to a violet hue which is covered by a high glaze iridescent band having pink and purple undertones. The iridescent band features an armorial crest executed in black accented with gilded details. The crest itself consists of a checkerboard shield surmounted by a trio of stylized flowers with a spade motif, all of which are flanked by lions rampant. Antique Rookwood Pottery Hand Painted Vessel Gorham Engraved Silver Decoration

Antique Rookwood Pottery Hand Painted Vessel Gorham Engraved Silver Decoration

By Rookwood Pottery Co., Gorham

Located in Cincinnati, OH

This late 19th century glazed earthenware mug was crafted in the studios of Cincinnati Ohio's renowned Rookwood Pottery Company and has a traditional form with an ear-shaped handle having a thumb rest. The exterior of the piece is finished in standard glaze and features hand painted decoration executed by highly regarded artist William Purcell McDonald (1864-1931). The decor has an appealing wine harvest theme consisting of grape vines that snake across the surface. The vines are studded with leaves in various shades of green along with two dangling clusters of plump reddish grapes. McDonald's application of paint is slightly raised in places giving the image a dimensional quality. The mug is further ornamented with an ornate silver overlay manufactured by Gorham. The silver decoration covers the handle and rim and includes a series of large etched foliate scrolls and flowers that extend across the body. There is also an eye-catching latticed area that provides a strong visual contrast with the gentle curving motifs found on the other parts of the silver overlay. The underside of the mug has an impressed RP mark along with shape 422 and the letter W. It also carries the incised initials of the artist - W. P. McD - and the letter L. The underside of the silver foot rim is stamped Gorham Manufacturing Co. along with a hand engraved mark reading S 1274 S. This highly collectible Rookwood silver...

Rubboli Lustre Majolica Vase with Mythical Beasts Decor

Rubboli Lustre Majolica Vase with Mythical Beasts Decor

By Rubboli

Located in Clifton Springs, NY

Sculptural, large ceramic Neo-Renaissance Rubboli vase is finished in cobalt, red and gold lustre. Hand-painted decor follows the classical shape of the piece, with abstract pattern accentuated the base and the top of the vase, and traditional designs of mythical beasts surrounding central medallion motifs. The vase is a stunning, museum quality example of the revival of the magnificent Italian Renaissance decoration of the 16th century. Late 19th century collecting craze for Renaissance majolica, especially lusterware, prompted the Italian potters to hunt for the secret formulas that were lost four hundred years earlier. Studios owned by such ceramicists as Cantagalli, Molaroni, Rubboli, Santarella, and others attempted to duplicate antique lusterware pieces for the general public. Each studio developed their own closely guarded formulation. In 1870s Paolo Rubboli...
