Small 18th Century Makkum Polychrome earthenware shoe slippery Makkum, The Netherlands, ca 1750 Beautiful colors, blue tones, yellow, green, some red and deep purple in the floral decor Makkum pottery is known worldwide for its high-quality, hand-painted tin-glazed ceramics (majolica). Production has been in the hands of Koninklijke (Royal) Tichelaar for centuries, the oldest family business in the Netherlands (founded in 1572). Originally, these types of earthenware shoes were often given as a gift in the 17th and 18th centuries as a symbolic wedding gift or love pledge (referring to the 'slipper' or marital fidelity).
