About the Item

Ceramic jug produced by Bodrogkeresztúri Kerámia, a Hungarian folk pottery workshop known for its distinctive glaze work. The jug features a full, rounded body that rises to a tall cylindrical neck with a generous looped handle. Dark metallic glaze — near gunmetal in tone — covers the body with a high-gloss reflective finish. Vertical trails of raised, beaded green glaze run from shoulder to neck on opposing sides, applied with a fluid hand and showing characteristic pooling and drip at the transitions. Bodrogkeresztúri Kerámia operated in northeastern Hungary and produced wares that drew on regional folk traditions while incorporating bolder, more expressive glaze techniques. The metallic black glaze and vivid green dot-work decoration are hallmarks of the workshop's output and reflect a vernacular approach to surface decoration distinct from contemporaneous studio ceramics in Western Europe. Pieces from this maker are rarely encountered outside Central European collecting circles. Shows wear consistent with age and use, most visible at the unglazed base. The glaze surface is well-preserved overall.
