About the Item

Ettore Sottsass was an influential Italian architect and industrial designer best known for redefining postmodern design in the late twentieth century. Born in 1917 in Innsbruck, Austria, and raised in Italy, Sottsass became internationally recognized for his bold use of color, geometric forms, and playful compositions. In 1981, he founded the Memphis Group, a collective of designers and architects who challenged the minimalism and strict functionalism that dominated modern design at the time. Their furniture and objects often featured bright laminates, asymmetrical shapes, and unconventional materials. Before Memphis, Sottsass worked extensively with the Italian company Olivetti, where he designed iconic products such as the Valentine typewriter. His work blurred the boundaries between art, architecture, and industrial design, emphasizing emotion and symbolism rather than pure utility. Today, Sottsass is considered one of the most important designers of the twentieth century, and his work continues to influence contemporary furniture, interiors, and visual culture worldwide.
