About the Item

Delicate young dancer with ash-blonde, chin-length hair, wearing a grey costume comprising knee-length trousers and a jacket with wide sleeve openings and a ruffled collar, posing with her arms raised as she takes a cautious stSet on a natural white, slightly stepped, rounded oval plinth with a delicate stone-tile decoration; the artist’s signature ‘Lorenzl’ is on the top of the plinth behind the figure, near her rear foot. Portrait of Clotilde von Derp (born Clotilde Margarete Anna Edle von der Planitz on 5 November 1892 in Berlin; died on 11 January 1974 in Rome) performing her dance ‘Papillons’ to music by Robert Schumann, 1912. She was a renowned German dancer and one of the most important early exponents of modern expressive dance. From 1913 onwards, she formed an internationally renowned dance duo with her future husband, the Russian dancer Alexander Sacharoff. She had a decisive influence on the European avant-garde dance scene of the early 20th century. The couple were famous for their extravagant, androgynous costumes and fluid choreography. Designed by Josef LORENZL (1892 - 1950), was an Austrian sculptor and ceramic modeler. His bronze statuettes often show graceful dancers with long legs and closed eyes. Lorenzl designed numerous ceramics for Friedrich Goldscheider and Keramos and was one of the most popular artists of Art Deco. Model 6248 was created and made circa 1928.
