About the Item

Large ceramic moon jar with a full, nearly spherical body rising from a small foot ring to a narrow neck finished with a natural cork stopper. The speckled white glaze varies across the surface — lighter and more uniform across the upper body, darker and more mottled toward the base, where the unglazed earthenware clay body is visible at the foot. Dark mineral flecks are distributed throughout the glaze, giving the surface a stony, textured quality. The moon jar form has deep roots in Korean ceramic tradition, where these near-perfect spheres were produced during the Joseon dynasty and later embraced by Mid-Century studio potters across Europe, the United States, and Japan. The form became a touchstone for studio ceramics movements of the postwar decades, valued for its organic simplicity and the technical challenge of achieving such a full, balanced silhouette. Mid-Century studio potters frequently worked in speckled and matte white glazes that emphasized form over surface decoration. Wear is consistent with age and use.
