About the Item

Eiwa was a German pottery manufacturer active primarily during the 1950s and 1960s, producing Mid-Century ceramic wares characterized by abstract and sgraffito-style surface decoration. The firm participated in the broader West German studio pottery movement, which embraced bold surface treatments and hand-worked clay bodies as a counterpoint to industrial postwar manufacturing. Manufactured from red clay with a darker brown slip or engobe applied over the surface, this extra-large barrel-form vase employs sgraffito carving — a technique in which the outer layer is incised to reveal the contrasting clay beneath. Decoration is organized into distinct horizontal registers: rope-twist bands at the neck and lower shoulder, rows of carved triangles at upper and lower sections, and a broad central field of tall rectangular panels with hatched striation. The two-tone contrast between the dark slip and exposed red clay gives the geometric patterning strong visual definition. The form is fully ovoid with a flat, textured opening at the top. Shows wear consistent with age and use.
