About the Item

This is an early English porcelain Milk Jug or Pitcher, made by C. J. Mason (The same factory who produced Mason's Ironstone) during the period of William IVth, circa 1830-1835. The jug is well potted with a slightly vertically fluted body and wavy rim supported on a low pedestal foot. It has a high loop handle in the style of the day with an upper thumb rest spur. The piece is hand painted in various coloured enamels over a lightly printed outline. The pattern is a listed Mason's pattern called Vase and Box pattern number 223, having a central octagonal panel surrounded by a floral vine with additional floral sprigs and scrolls in typical bright enamels. Gilded highlights are on the side handles and the knob of the lid. This pattern is illustrated on page 114 of a guide to Mason's patent ironstone patterns, published by The Mason's collectors club. This pattern was also used on ironstone and earthenware wares. The Jug is marked to the underside with number 223 in iron red.
