About the Item

18th-century set of two Montpellier faience plates, France, circa 1770. The tin-glazed earthenware plates are hand-painted in polychrome enamels with a structured floral composition consisting of a central bouquet, three floral bouquets positioned along the rim, and three additional smaller scattered floral sprigs. The decoration includes tulip forms, carnation-type blossoms, bluebell-like flowers, buds, and elongated leafy stems. The arrangement reflects the typical decorative grammar of Montpellier faience in the second half of the eighteenth century, combining a central focal motif with peripheral and scattered floral elements. Montpellier faience production developed from the late seventeenth century and expanded throughout the eighteenth century, supported by the city's role as a commercial and artisanal center in Languedoc. Documented workshops include those associated with Joseph Ollivier, Jacques Ollivier, Antoine Sallanove, and François Piquot, active during the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Production increased in response to growing domestic demand for tin-glazed tableware from urban and provincial households, positioning Montpellier alongside Marseille and Moustiers as a significant regional production center. A fine example of French tin-glazed earthenware, suitable for collectors of Marseille, Moustiers, Rouen, Strasbourg, and other French faience. Please have a look at my other listings. Condition: Very good condition; some wear and slight chipping to the rims consistent with age.
