About the Item

An 18th-century Delft earthenware plaque painted with a Biblical scene from Genesis 27:27, depicting Isaac and Jacob. The moment shown is when Jacob approaches and kisses his father; Isaac, recognizing him by the scent of his garments, bestows his blessing. Biblical subjects were a well-established source of inspiration in Dutch decorative arts, particularly in Delftware, where painters frequently drew upon engraved sources. The scene is enclosed within a molded self-frame decorated with rocaille ornament, pierced at the top with a hole for suspension. The border is enriched with polychrome C-scrolls characteristic of the Louis XV (Rococo) period. Plaques with this type of rocaille molded self-frame are not uncommon in Delftware and appear to have been especially popular during the Rococo era, when flowing, asymmetrical ornament was widely embraced in interior decoration. Such plaques functioned both as decorative wall pieces and as expressions of cultural refinement in 18th-century Dutch interiors.
