About the Item

This striking pair of tile pictures is painted in manganese purple on a white tin glaze, each panel made up of six tiles laid two across and three down, with the design carried boldly across the joins. Each shows a horse rearing at full stretch, the forelegs thrown up and the head turned sharply back, the mane and tail streaming out in long sweeps of the brush. The two are painted in opposition, so that the horses face one another when the panels are hung as a pair. The painting is free and confident, worked wet in broad strokes with the loaded brush and finished with fine trailing lines, and the horses are drawn with real character, the heads narrow and open-mouthed with the teeth showing. Below them runs a foreground of scrolling ground and tufted grasses, the sweeping curves punctuated with clusters of dots, and above, in an otherwise open sky, a few birds are indicated with the lightest flicks of the brush. The reverse of each tile shows the coarse, sandy buff body under a rough surface, unglazed and without nail holes. Tin-glazed tiles were produced in the Netherlands in enormous quantity through the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and although the trade takes its name from Delft, the principal centers of tile manufacture were elsewhere, notably at Rotterdam, Utrecht, Harlingen, and Makkum. Tiles were used by the thousand to line passages, kitchens, dairies, and fireplace surrounds, and were exported across northern Europe. Manganese, giving a warm purple-brown, was in use alongside cobalt from the middle of the seventeenth century and was widely fashionable through the eighteenth. Single pictorial tiles of animals, ships, and figures were common everywhere, but multi-tile pictures composing a single large subject were a more considerable undertaking, intended for a specific position in a room, and survive in far smaller numbers. A rearing horse drawn at this scale, across six tiles, is among the more ambitious of the animal subjects. Hung facing one another over a chimneypiece or flanking a doorway, the two panels have real presence, and the warm purple reads beautifully against plaster, paneling, or a strong wall color.
