About the Item

A pair of Dutch Delft sweetmeat dishes in finely modelled fleur-de-lys form, painted in underglaze blue. These pieces belong to the 17th–18th century tradition of Delft sweetmeat services (confituur-starren), produced for serving preserved fruits, candied sweets, and other sugar-based delicacies during tea and dessert service. Their development is closely linked to the rise of imported sugar in the Dutch Republic and the resulting refinement of table culture and display. The fleur-de-lys outline reflects the sculptural approach characteristic of Delft tablewares of the period, where form and presentation were as significant as function. Such dishes were often part of larger composite arrangements, typically organised around a central star-shaped dish, emphasising symmetry and visual order on the table. More than utilitarian serving pieces, these dishes illustrate the evolving etiquette of early modern dining, where Delftware played a central role in structuring both use and presentation within the domestic interior.
