About the Item

This 8 piece charming antique blue-and-white dinnerware set in a classic English chinoiserie style, attributed to Ridgway and produced in the “Dresden Opaque China” pattern, circa 1820s. The collection showcases an elegant floral design with a central basket overflowing with blossoms, rendered in rich cobalt blue against a creamy white ground. The set includes four round plates and one rectangular handled serving dish, all featuring beautifully ornate molded rims with floral and scroll detailing that add depth and refinement to each piece. The decoration is timeless and decorative, equally suited to display or careful use. The reverse bears the Ridgway “DRESDEN OPAQUE CHINA” backstamp within a blue scroll cartouche. “Dresden” refers to the pattern name rather than a German origin, while “Opaque China” was Ridgway’s trade term for pearlware—an early 19th-century earthenware developed as an affordable alternative to porcelain. As expected with genuine antique pearlware, the pieces show age-appropriate crazing, enhancing their authentic character. Dimensions: Plates: approximately 9 inches in diameter Rectangular serving dish: approximately 9 × 6.5 inches, 1.5 inches high A lovely and increasingly hard-to-find antique set that beautifully represents early English pottery craftsmanship and classic blue-and-white design.
