About the Item

This exceptionally rare and highly desirable set of twelve hand-painted faience dinner or luncheon plates was designed by the renowned French ceramist Robert Picault (1919–2000) in Vallauris, France. Executed in glossy black glaze with Picault's distinctive stylized depictions of colorful birds and tropical fish, each plate is individually hand-decorated in vibrant shades of yellow, green, ochre, rust, and white, exemplifying the artist's playful graphic aesthetic. Produced during the golden age of Vallauris ceramics in the 1950s and 1960s, these plates embody the spirit of French Mid-Century Modern design, when Picault, alongside celebrated contemporaries such as Roger Capron and Georges Jouve, helped establish Vallauris as the epicenter of innovative postwar ceramic production. Beautifully balancing artistic expression with functional design, complete sets of this scale and quality are seldom encountered, making them a remarkable addition for collectors of French ceramics, Mid-Century Modern design, or decorative tableware. Their bold imagery and timeless sophistication allow them to be enjoyed equally as functional tableware or striking wall displays.
