About the Item

Imperial Crimson: A Set of Eight Regency Coalport "Cameo" Soup Plates After Hamilton, This magnificent set of eight deep soup plates represents a masterclass in high-style English porcelain from the Regency period. Manufactured by the Coalport (John Rose) factory in Shropshire, these plates were originally sent as undecorated "white wares" to London, where they were meticulously painted and gilded to suit the most fashionable Neoclassical tastes of the early 19th century. The design is centered around a striking salmon-ground border, which is elaborately decorated with a broad, double Greek key or meander pattern and enclosed by bands of rich gilding. Within the central well, a fine gilt "seaweed" or vermiculated pattern covers the surface, granting the porcelain a shimmering, textured appearance. The focal point of each plate is a central medallion containing en grisaille classical figures, painted in shades of grey to simulate stone relief against a deep red ground after George Hamilton . Framed by further bands of intricate gilding, this treatment creates the brilliant visual effect of a miniature Roman cameo or bas-relief sculpture. While unmarked, the specific characteristics, including the form and quality of the paste, are reliably attributed to Coalport porcelain of the John Rose period. Dimensions 9 3/4 inches (24.8 cm) Diameter 1 3/4 inches (4.4 cm) Depth Condition Report The plates are in excellent condition. Historical Context During the early 19th century, Coalport was renowned for producing high-quality porcelain bodies, including an early form of hard-paste porcelain. It was common practice for these white wares to be sold to independent enamellers in cities like London, Bristol, and Dublin for finishing, allowing English manufacturers to compete directly with imported continental pieces. The exceptional quality and highly academic nature of the en grisaille painting on this set suggest the decoration was executed by one of the premier London decorating studios of the time. These plates perfectly embody the refined tastes of the Regency era, an aesthetic period that heavily emphasized balance, antiquity, and learning. Directly inspired by archaeological discoveries in Italy, the use of the Greek key motif and classical figures demonstrates a sophisticated fusion of advanced ceramic manufacturing and high decorative art.
